Discover Jamaica Bay Tour Series: Sunset Kayak Tour of Subway Island
Join Don Riepe, Jamaica Bay Guardian at the American Littoral Society for a sunset kayak tour of Jamaica Bay and its iconic marsh islands. Depart from the Community Boathouse at Beach 88th st. and paddle to the southern tip of Subway Island, a popular nesting area and stop-over for year-round and migratory birds. Learn about the unique ecology of Subway Island, and the different types of wildlife that call it home. Paddle around Subway Island, part of the Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge, while taking in the sunset on the return trip to Beach 88th st. Kayaks generously provided by the Community Boathouse. 18 years of age or older unless accompanied by an adult. Registration and waiver required.
Spots are extremely limited due to safety guidelines related to COVID-19. Please follow local, state, and federal guidance related to COVID-19 when planning your trip to the event. Registration will open on Friday, August 28 at 5:00 pm. Please only register if you absolutely plan to attend. A face covering is required and social distancing will be practiced throughout the event. Masks and hand sanitizer will be available. Please wear appropriate clothing, and bring sunscreen, a water bottle, a hat, and bug spray!

The Discover Jamaica Bay: By Land and By Sea Tour Series highlights city, state, and national parks throughout Jamaica Bay in Brooklyn and Queens. This tour series focuses on the unique environment and ecology of Jamaica Bay, while also highlighting the historical, cultural, and social context of the 10,000 acres of parkland in this 18,000 acre estuary.
