Open House New York: West Pond Living Shoreline

  • Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge Visitor Center 175- 10 Cross Bay Boulevard Queens, NY, 11693 United States (map)

Join Gateway National Recreation Area, the Jamaica Bay-Rockaway Parks Conservancy, and the Science and Resilience Institute of Jamaica Bay on a walking tour of the new West Pond Living Shoreline project at Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge, completed in 2021. A unique source of freshwater for resident and migratory birds, the pond was breached during Superstorm Sandy and repaired in 2017. Visitors on this tour will learn how the National Park Service and its partners used this project to create new habitat and enhance the resilience of this critical feature using natural materials.

This experience is offered during OHNY Weekend as a part of Sandy + 10, a series exploring the $18 billion of investment for recovery and resilience in the 10-year wake of Hurricane Sandy. Sandy + 10 is presented in partnership with Columbia University’s Center for Resilient Cities and Landscapes.

Access Notes: Must be comfortable walking over uneven surfaces outdoors. Masks may be required for indoor spaces.

Saturday Notes: First-come-first-served tours (capacity 20) on the hour at 10am, 11am, and noon.
