Stand Up Paddle Boarding for Beginners — Winter Coaching with Surf Skate Fitness

Interested in trying Stand Up Paddle Boarding (SUP) but not sure where to start? This FREE Winter Coaching Session is designed especially for beginners of all ages—including grown-ups! (50+). Wondering if SUP is something you can do? The answer is YES!  This warm and cozy indoor session will show you just how accessible, enjoyable, and beginner-friendly stand up paddle boarding can be.   

This engaging, no-water-needed session will introduce you to the basics of SUP, including an overview of techniques, safety protocols, and just how accessible and beginner-friendly the sport truly is. You’ll also get an inside look at my ‘secret’ winter exercise routine—a simple yet effective way to build strength, balance, and endurance from the comfort of your home.

Expect to learn:

  • Easy exercises to build SUP-ready strength and stability

  • Modifications (regressions) to suit different ability levels

  • Budget-friendly home fitness equipment recommendations

Achilles Adaptive Cycling

Join Us for Adaptive Cycling at Floyd Bennett Field!

Jamaica Bay-Rockaway Parks Conservancy and Achilles International are excited to team up again to bring adaptive cycling to Floyd Bennett Field!

This free program offers people living with disabilities the chance to enjoy a ride on a tandem bike or handcycle in a welcoming, supportive environment. Achilles staff and volunteer guides will be on-site to answer questions and assist new riders.

There’s no better way to enjoy the great outdoors than by riding through Floyd Bennett Field, New York City’s first municipal airport and a historic gem within the National Park System. Come take in the fresh air, open spaces, and scenic views while you ride!

Helmets must be worn while cycling. If you have your own helmet, please bring it along—but don’t worry, we’ll have some available if you need one!

Join Jamaica Bay-Rockaway Parks Conservancy, Gateway National Recreation Area, and the Garden by the Bay for an easy, open kayak paddle in Jamaica Bay!

We’ll paddle around Norton Basin, a protected tributary of the Bay that offers calm conditions welcoming to beginner and experienced kayakers alike. The shoreline of Norton Basin is surrounded by natural areas and open space, making it the perfect place to spot native wildlife – from small shorebirds to soaring raptors. The experienced rangers at Gateway National Recreation Area will provide kayaking instruction, along with on-water support to ensure a safe and fun kayaking experience!

NYC Bird Alliance - Winter Birding at Shirley Chisholm State Park with Outdoor Afro

Join NYC Bird Alliance and Outdoor Afro to explore the largest state park in New York City, Shirley Chisholm State Park! Named after the trailblazing Shirley Chisholm—Brooklyn native, first African American Congresswoman, and the first woman and African American to run for President—this park is a must-see. Built on what was once a landfill, the park is now a thriving spot full of wildlife, including hawks, waterfowl, wetlands, and native plants. Come out and enjoy the beauty of this amazing space while honoring Shirley Chisholm’s incredible legacy!

The group will meet at the Penn Ave Entrance of Shirley Chisholm State Park (1750 Granville Payne Ave, Brooklyn, NY 11239)
